PROJECT 2
For Project 2, Iam to design and construct a 1:1 structure for a specific action, in groups. The structure will be placed in a real dormant green space to activate its use.

I will be working with Bamboo and be required to understand the nature and characteristics of the material and demonstrate basic knowledge in construction.

Exploration construction details, e.g. joints, joinery and structural quality with other supporting materials (rope, steel, tensile fabric). I am to develop my design through a series of workshops, tests and investigations involving scaled study models, exploring architectural elements and principles (learned from Project 1) and incorporating anthropometry and ergonomics into your 1:1 structure.
We started of as a 4 X 5 individual teams , together we went for a site visit to take measurements . We observe the environment and noticed the surrounded trees can act as a natural canopy shade for the community to celebrate under the structure. We then list down the measurement and observation we got at the site for later use in design.
1. Site visit : Taking Measurement & observing surrounding
2. Planning : Initial design sketch stage
After discussing , we decided to came out of a structure that have a triangulation motion focusing on the positive space and circulation created for celebration movement and the seating in the middle will act as a resting pod where users can relax while not losing the fun . Ergonomics of structure are also considered in this project.
3. Grouping : Finalizing bamboo structural design
Our design was chosen and I was appointed as a 20 member leader . After depicting the flaws in the initial design together, which conclude as the non integration seating ( in design & functionality : community prefer face to face talking) we decided to came out of a new design which enhance the integration of structural's triangulation concept .
4. Building : Bamboo building process
The design was set with a 3 set of triangular podium which act as the structure stand & seating . I assigned the role of members into 3 teams : drawing , building & excavating teams. I then start to plan the method of conjoining the bamboo which mostly by a fish-mount joint, square lashing , bamboo pins & weaving. After planning & researching, we started experimenting the method together and manage to finish the structure in a week.
5. Foundation : Excavating & setting up
After finishing the bamboo structure, we dug up holes around 45 cm deep to fit out foundation which include the wooden pole pierce into the bamboo internal knot to lock it in place. We then covered the bamboo legs with plastic bottle head to prevent it from contacting the soil , Rocks are then filled in the bottle to add extra weigh , drainage issue and even function as aesthetic purposes.
6. Drawings : Presentation Boards
The drawings team started the boards after the completion of structures which include sections of introduction to the design concept , ergonomics in design , structural details , orthographic drawings and lastly, the abstract drawing tattoo stamps of team members's image of the symphony.
: Reflection :
The structural Symphony was a continuation of my previous ( project 1) as I added the element of paraboid into the roof design . This modular structure serves purpose as combination of man made with nature. Together, people are able to celebrate in this functional space in one.
As mentioned previously the design concept of symphony focuses on triangulation which provide a visual impact & highlight the structural stability. The play of negative space located between the triangles create a breathing space for users while still bonding the entire structure together .
Overall experience, this is quite a hectic project as the time was really limited, I've learn the importance of planning and team communication. As we are all inexperience in handling bamboo and building, I as the leader must take on the responsible to guide, I spend a lot of time on researching of technical side and luckily for me , my team are very cooperative .
Through experimenting together , we manage to build a 1 : 1 structure within the time given. I was really happy when the structure was built. Although the process is tiring but I would say this is a really good experience for all of us as we start equipping life long learning skills.

( TBH after this project , I was convinced that I could built a bamboo raft and escape an isolated island if I were ever trapped )
